WARNING!!! DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT!!!We built a new home and moved in August 2012. We had the GU195s model installed. Within a few months we had no hot water and an E02 error code. Plumbers came and fixed it. By February the same thing happened and they put in a brand new GU195s model. This past weekend (four months after install)our hot water has been going in and out on us.We called the plumbers who worked on it before and they said they were no longer doing warranty calls on the unit because the company(Grand Hall,USA, Inc. 3838 West Miller Road, Garland, Texas 75041)quit paying them to do warranty calls. Called the company 800 number and were referred to their website, which we were told listed all the contractors that handle warranty service.We called over 20 listed contractors from the company website that were within a half hour radius of us. Most of the contractors had never even heard of the company and NONE said they handled warranty calls. Of the few that had heard of the company, none had anything good to say about the eternal hot water heaters.My wife called their 800 number again and told them that none of the companies they listed were actual contractors for them. (I think they just randomly list every plumber from the phone book that is in your area, and don't actually have any contracts with any of them.) The company informed my wife they would find someone for us. That was two days ago. We have yet to hear anything back.We are now considering legal action against the company and the broker who sold us the original unit.

Eternal hybrid water heater

I WAS an Eternal service tech, in fact one of the few Grandhall recommended in my area. In the last year, they for an unknown reason changed regional sales and distribution and dropped service providers and trained others*. We have been working on tankless for 30 years beginning with Bosch, Paloma and then as power vent models hit the market like Rinnai (we're the Authorized Service Provider of the Year for the Western US including Canada, Hawaii and Alaska), Tagaki, Rheem, Noritz and Navien. What all tankless including Eternal require is enough gas measured in BTU. An average tank requires 65,000 BTU while the larger tankless require 199,000. Not that they need it except at maximum hot water demand. If you start out at the meter on natural gas and see a plate on the meter that states say 250 cubic feet you then multiple this by 1,100 and you get 276,000 BTU. In calculating gas requirements you now subtract the 199,000 for the tankless. start subtracting even more for the gas home heating system, dryer, kitchen, fireplace,etc and you suddenly drop below the ability of the meter to supply gas and the problems begin. With Eternal gas is critical and not only that it requires a very fine adjustment with also a manometer, something few plumbers have. One the newer models they require a combustion gas analyzer that one out of a thousand plumbers will have (mine cost $9K.) This means many times a dedicated gas line needs to be installed to provide enough to operate properly and adjusted when newly installed. This is recommended by ALL tankless manufacture's but rarely performed. No tankless can simply replace a tank. Not only gas but venting and electrical have to be altered. Rinnai has a concentric vent which not only vents combustion gas out, it takes makeup air from the outside meaning it can be installed virtually anywhere in a house. Eternal has a separate intake and exhaust where the combustion air has to be calculated from the room which can lead to further problems. One incident was in Carmel Valley, CA where the installer had installed the GU 145 S in a tiny half bath and drew the combustion air from this 20 sq ft space causing a flame failure which had to be corrected by the installer. I could give pages of cases where I would call tech support in Texas and sometimes have to take photos for them to run by more senior and then have a part shipped out. For the most part these are good units but they do have an inherent flaws. The burners assembly is a screen and in another generation would drown in condensation at lower demand and during "short cycling", the time when the unit would attempt to keep the hybrid tank at temperature. The most recent includes a built in secondary condensate collector. Still this same problem persists and more so with recirculation. *Gradhall made one fatal flaw, dropping many excellent service companies, not supporting them with continued education. They now require factory training which means they require this in Texas. They have cherry picked in my opinion some very poor new service companies one when I asked him about his training more specific, does he own a combustion analyzer or a manometer, he said no he just does this with a screw driver. I have not been given a specific reason from being dropped and will take the high road here. In my experience, they have been responsive but to decline warranties, erase a program of installers and service personal due to ego's of sales and distributors is the death of any company or product.

Pleasures and pitfalls of Eternal Tankless Water Heater

Advantage: Consistently hot water available within seconds, not minutes -- at any hot water faucet in the house. Works better with hot water recirculation loop than conventional water heater with tank.Disadvantage: Two service calls during the first year, while under warranty. Not saving as much natural gas as expected. Increased electricity cost because the recirculation line pump is active all of the time.I had the Eternal GU195S installed in November, 2011. So far the motherboard has been replaced to eliminate E11 error codes and a mixing valve needs to be replaced due to an E27 error code. An expensive water heater should not require this kind of service twice in less than one year.

Super Insulated, Energy Efficient, Lifetime Warranty

Last month, we converted to whole house solar and have become interested in installing the most energy efficient appliances as a result.One of our greatest utility expenses is our use of propane. Converting our water heating from propane to electric is a savings in itself, more so when you have solar power.This unit was the second most efficient water heater I could find. The other design has a fan on it which blows and is reported to be noisy, similar to a De-humidifier.I was impressed by this particular design as it is ultra insulated, constructed of polymer materials which won't rust and comes with a life time warranty (as long as we own our home). I was able to install it myself as it was quite light weight when empty. The brass fittings which protrude through the shell are very nice quality, including the pressure relief valve. Had no problem connecting with copper fittings and plumbing it in place. I placed it on blocks up off the floor to reduce the distance to overhead copper tubing.I have to say that the unit we received appears very different from the one shown in this listing. I am attaching photos for your visual reference. Our unit is quite squat and large in diameter, something which should be considered if you have a smaller closet space for your tank.I have no reference to compare this unit with another electric unit, as we replaced a on-demand propane fueled water heater. But I can say, it is definitely cheaper to operate when compared to that system.To determine if electric is a better choice than propane, please use this formula; compare the cost of 27 kwh to the cost of one gallon of propane... in our case, propane (as of this year) is now more expensive than electric. Having whole house solar also aided in my decision to convert.Once up to operating temperature (factory set at 120 deg. F) this unit shuts down and holds it's temp very well. You can alter the holding temperature, but it's not convenient to do so. You must remove access covers and some insulation to access this control/setting. We are fine with the factory pre-set, so this is just a fyi.After installation, no leaks or other mechanical problems, unit is tidy and nicely finished on the exterior.I'm very happy with it and would have no reservations about recommending it to others.It's a fiber glass reinforced inner tank, heavily insulated with a polymer exterior, no fuss, no rust...Expensive, but worth it in the long run.

Marathon ok but may not be best choice

Marathon would only be my first choice if I lived in an all electric home and the water heater is located inside the home.The marathon water heater is a good choice if you have to use electricity to heat your water. It has 2.5" of insulation, non corrosive tank and a long tank warranty. It is cheaper to operate over its life compared to a conventional electric water heater because after 10 years (avg life of a metal electric water heater) there is not a need to buy a new water heater.The potential drawbacks include it's taller than other water heaters and pipes may have to be reconfigured, it's plastic and care must be taken during install, it's not energy star rated and it doesn't have the same recovery rate as a gas water heater. It's also more expensive to operate than a gas water heater. Check local plumbing stores to see if they stock replacement parts - They're non existent where I live.Generally speaking, gas water heaters are cheaper to operate and have a faster recovery time than any electric water heater except hybrid water heaters (no, tankless electric water heaters are not energy efficient). If gas is not an option or your water heater is outside, in the attic or in the basement, there's another choice that is energy star compliant and ... it's electric. The hybrid electric water heater is a good choice, but it's got to be located outside of living areas. It takes heat from the surrounding air and puts it into the water. This heat pump technology is very efficient. The drawbacks include, the heater is taller (move pipes), more expensive initially, makes noise (doesn't bother me but some people comment on it). Benefits include may have rebates (energy star), cheaper than a gas water heater to operate and has a control panel for things like vacation and heat adjustment with the touch of a button.There are other great choices for heating water including solar and geothermal, but I've never installed them. I've installed gas tank and tankless water heaters and electric, Marathon and Hybrid water heaters.

Great alternative to propane water heater

My propane water heater was consuming about 300 gallons of propane a year and costing me about $900 a year. This water heater is supposed to cost me about $230/yr in electricity. With the tax credit and fuel savings, this hybrid water heater will shortly pay for itself and provide great savings and more dependable energy costs -- especially since the old water heater was eight years old.It turned out that the plumber/electrician had little trouble running a new electric line from the breaker box to the furnace room in my house. Hooking up the water heater was straightforward.The compressor heat pump only operates a few times during the day and even when it operates, it is a quiet hum or buzz (like my refrigerator). Home Depot offers a very long protection package. Very exciting and worthwhile investment especially since new "high efficiency" propane water heaters consume about 260 gallons a year and tankless water heater heaters consume about 200 gallons of propane a year.

This is a good purchase for an all-electric house

Our family recently moved into an all-electric house that was equipped with an obsolete, malfunctioning solar system. We needed to replace the solar system because it couldn't keep the water hot overnight, so we had to run the tank's heating elements for several hours a day. We were literally burning through money.We looked into a regular electric water heater, which costs about half the price of this heat-pump water heater, but my experience with running heating elements on my failing solar unit made it clear that the elements run up a high energy bill. We installed this 50-gallon Rheem water heater six months ago and are extremely pleased.Here's why this unit works so well for us.Our energy company charges us on a graduated scale for kilowatts used. We have four rate levels, so for the first 600 kWh we pay an average of 15 cents/kWh. When we get above that the rate goes up to an average of 24 cents/kWh. Then the power company adds another 6 or 7 cents per kWh, just because they like to and the state lets them.The impact of this on water heating is huge. If the heater uses only elements to heat the water, those draw a lot of power and the usage gets into the higher-tier rates real soon, and the electrons get real expensive really fast.This came into play when we had a full house during the holiday season and set the water heater to operate using the elements to heat, rather than the heat pump. After our visitors left and we set the heater to the "energy-saving" mode, our energy bill dropped $80-$100. There were other variables in play at the time, but nearly all of the energy drop was in the water heater.We think that this water heater provides value, even though it's more expensive to install. When we compared the price of this unit with a standard electric water heater, this cost about $1,000 more. We also had to beef up our circuit box, which cost about $350. But at a savings of $100 a month, we will get the initial extra investment back in 14 months. Then that $100 monthly saving is money in my pocket for the life of the water heater. (We didn't go with a tankless electric heater because the upgrade to our circuit box to make that functional would have been enormous. It didn't pencil out for us.)Regarding the unit's ability to heat water, we have no complaints. We push the heat setting above the standard setting and the water is hot and doesn't appear to cost that much more than the recommended setting.Also, there was a comment that 50 gallons is too small. We have four adults living in our house, and 50 gallons is plenty. It's like any other heater: If every one takes showers one right after another, someone's going to have a cold shower. If they're spaced out, everyone gets a hot shower. Rheem's literature on the unit explains how long it takes to reheat the water, and it's pretty good. Also, I bought a good, water-conserving Alsons 655CBX Fluidics Water Saving Shower Head, Chrome for one of our showers, and I'm sure that's making a difference. I paid a little extra for that, but that also will pay off in the long run on both my water and energy bills. (I advise against picking up any low-flow shower head at a big-box store on the promise it will save water. My Alsons uses a gallon less per minute than something you'd get at Home Depot, which can conserve 15-30 gallons a day more than an off-the-shelf model, or 450-900 gallons a month. The store clerks are clueless about this.)One thing to keep in mind is that the water heater needs 800 cubic feet of space. Ours is in a laundry room with slightly less volume than that, but it opens up to another room so it has plenty of air to draw from. It also makes some noise, because it's the same technology as an air conditioner and sounds exactly like that. It runs for a while then turns off. It doesn't trip on a lot because the unit is extremely well-insulated.I think this water heater is ideal for a home in a warm or mild climate, because it draws heat from the surrounding air to heat the water. However, it may be challenged in a cold climate.P.S. I'm adding this comment one year after I installed this water heater. It has met or exceeded my expectations. I have halved my electricity usage, which has cut my electricity bill by two-thirds during some months because of the tiered rate. And, according to my utility company's website, my house rates lowest on my street for electricity consumed. Considering that other houses use propane to heat or cook, while mine is 100 percent electric, that indicates that this water heater is extremely efficient. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Doesn't work in Efficiency Mode

While it does work fine in 'normal' mode, it does not in 'efficiency' mode -- one of the reasons for using such a water heater. I called Rheem and they sent out a replacement circuit board -- but the problem was not solved. The problem is that as the water temperature drops (either due to water usage or just over time), the heater does not start up again until the water temperature drops to 80 degrees. This is regardless of ambient temperatures. Try to wash dishes or take a shower when the water temperature is 82 degrees and you wouldn't be happy with such a heater.The manufacture's tech people tell me that it is working according to specifications. I don't think this is the case. And if that were the case, don't buy a water heater with such ridiculous specifications.

I purchased this from Amazon 2 weeks ago because they had the best price and no stores stock this as a grab and go anyway. We intend to use this in heat pump mode only that is the reason we chose the 82 gallon model, the government electric version (Geospring) is only 50 gallons so you can easily find the need to run the expensive inductive heat elements. This water heater is branded "American Water Heater" but is imported from China by A.O. Smith and is also the same as the reliance heat pump model. I did know it was an A.O. smith product but I was unaware that it was made in China. After a quick disappointment I reminded myself that all of my American made water heaters have prematurely failed (6 or 7 years, like a clock), so maybe its time to try something different. Things to keep in mind would include the cold air that it produces; I am in Ca. so it's a good thing but might not be for everyone also the height is over 80 inches so it might not fit in some applications. I would not use this in a residential closet; a garage or large utility room would work much better. The noise is not that bad but I did notice that the filter is too restrictive and has plastic molding flaws that keep the air from moving freely. The noise is greatly reduced when the filter is off so I might call in for a new filter or make a better one on my own. It looks like it draws about 1100 watts when running and after a 15 gallon draw it runs for about 1:20 minutes to get back to 115f, but with 80+ gallons this should work fine for most applications in economy mode only. My stats are approximate but I will update when I have more time with it. Update...(3 months ownership) So far I have only seen a $30 increase in my electric bill vs $75 LP. I am also happy with the heater so far and with the $1000 premium paid over a conventional heater it should be close to a 2 year pay off.

Great technology!

I don't have gas at my house, so a tankless water heater was not an option. I didn't want to try to go solar nor did I want to install another inefficient water heater in my Phoenix, AZ baking hot (in the summer) garage. I needed 80 gallons for my family of 7. A construction foreman friend of mine suggested I look into hybrid (heat pump) water heaters, and I did. After tons of research, there are really only two 80 gallon hybrids that have both the quality and the right price points on Amazon and other places. One is the AO Smith Voltex and the other is the Stiebel Eltron ACC300 Accelera 300. The Accelera is rated higher and is little more pricey. It's German-manufactured and looks solid, but the extra $$ couldn't swing it for me. AO Smith is a product that is more readily serviced and has a great reputation in recent years for solid water heaters. Pexsupply.com had the AO Smith for $2132 with free shipping and great support, so I made my order through them. I employed a licensed plumber whom I trust for the install for $400. After installation two-weeks ago, I have been very impressed with the unit. I've been running the unit on Efficiency Mode (Heat Pump-only) since initial start up and we have had no issues with heat at any shower for all 7 of us. With a $201 annual electric rating, I am certainly looking forward to seeing this thing pay for itself in about 5 years here in Phoenix. My old 80 gallon had a $587 annual rating. The bonus is that it blows cold air over my garage work bench, and in the summer, that will be a God-send when my garage temps often reach 125 degrees.

GU145S review after 9 months of operation

I've now owned the GU145S for about 9 months now and have used it through the winter which really lets you know how it performs. I live in Dallas, TX, so cold here is about 15F worst case for a few days per year and above freezing most of the time. Overall, for my house, it's a great unit, but I'd recommend a bigger one for cold weather. I had a few installations issues that I'll describe too. This was a do-it-yourself project where I ran the new electric, gas and plumbing moving the water heater into the attic.General: Go for the S units as they have stainless steel internal parts, which should give you better life. The outside is for show, but the inside is what matters. The unit is unique in that it has a mini-2 gallon internal storage tank, which makes it put out hot water from the instant you turn it on. Remember, you still have to heat up the pipes between the unit and the faucet, so it does not mean instant hot water, but it does make it produce as good as a regular water heater would.Installation: The unit comes with a mounting bracket and hex head wood screws. The wood screws were so cheap that they stripped when inserting them into predrilled holes. The air inlets come covered with packing tape which I was unable to completely remove, leaving unsightly tape and glue on the new stainless steel. This nice unit is marred with this ugliness. Beyond that, installation was a breeze. The best part of this unit is that you can vent it with schedule 40 PVC, saving you $400-$600 over stainless steel. Since these units PUSH air out with fans, you must have a sealed pipe all the way to the outside. Normal gas heaters use covection and don't care about leaky pipes. You CANNOT reuse your existing flue pipes. Also, you'll notice a condensate drain must be connected. It'll generate as much condensate as your AC, so be prepared for that. I did write the manufacturer a letter describing the minor installation problems and received no acknowledgement in reply.Gas lines: Most folks that I've talked to regarding these units have avoided installing them because their house was not plumbed for enough gas. Once you need to have a new gas line installed, the installation price goes way up. (Electric units are similar in that you need more wire and breakers installed). I was luck enough to have 1 1/4 inch pipe in the attic already and was able to insert a tee. My unit needed a 3/4" final run.Operation: I have this unit installed in the attic above the garage, so it the same temperature there as outside, less wind chill. I regularly operate two showers at the same time, and sometimes more. When it's 32F and greater outside, no problem. It's amazing that starting and stopping the tub or another shower or kitchen sink does nothing to an already running shower. No temperature drop or rise is noticed due to this units design! When the temperature is in the teens, two showers at the same time will be lukewarm. One is as hot as you'd like it, but two are not. If you have extended cold spells, I'd suggest the bigger unit. (And BTW, my cold water inlet pipes are insulated all the way to the unit).Value: There's little value in tankless units unless you are using horribly made water heaters. I replaced two perfectly good (3 year old) 50 gallon tanks in series with this unit. I did it to remove these from my garage and to have a small footprint in the attic. The base cost of the 2 gas heaters was about $1300 new and the cost of this unit was $1600. The operating costs of my two 50 gal units were $259/yr (total $520/yr) and the operating cost of the tankless was $195. It's a long payback on operating costs alone.Other: Here's what scares me.... If I lost one 50 gal unit, I could still take a hot shower using the other. With only one unit, if it must be serviced, cold showers for all while we're down. If you lose electricity, cold showers. The manufacturer does not appear to be friendly to the do-it-yourself types and as such, warns against internet or local purchases without an installer. They appear to make it seem that you'll not be warrantied if you do-it-yourself. If this concerns you, be careful. (I do have a recirculating pump installed that moves water thru the lines on a timer and thermostat. To the tankless unit, it is simply a hot water call. The GU145S works seamlessly with the recirculating pump.)Summary: Do do this to save money. Do it because you need the convenience of size. I like the unit and would recommend it to others.

Frustrated

We purchased our GU145S LP water heater Oct 2010. My husband studied for months the different tankless heaters out there, and chose Eternal, to our dismay they are not what they claim to be.., by Feb 2011 the unit would shut down when we took a shower or washed dishes, contacted the repair guy from here and he in turn contacted the tech support and decided it was he mother board, so they sent a new mother board in Feb 2011, it is now Aug 2012 and the mother board again goes bad, now the company will pay for the part, but WE have to pay $70.00 to have the part overnighted to us so we have hot water, it's not even 2 years old and this will be the 3rd mother board, to say the least WE ARE FRUSTRATED and the company will not do anything about it....Think twice about getting this unit because they do not take care of the customer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

eternal GU195S Failure

I purchased an eternal GU195S water heater on JAN 24 2012 and had it installed by a contractor recommended by them on their website. On saturday JAN 5 2013 it failed. The unit has an error display screen which was showing a E27 code, according to my owners manual this is a mixing valve failure. I got on line saturday morning and called the customer service support phone number advertised as 24/7 with LIVE actual people on staff to help...I got the standard leave a message and we will return your call during normal business hours. Next I called the contractor that installed the heater, he was able to talk to a real person via the contractors phone number but after being informed "that the mixing valve fails quite often" was told that the part could not be ordered until monday "during normal business hours". On monday my contractor called to order the part which was still under warranty but to ship it next day air would cost an additional $65. I elected to pay the extra fee in the name of cleanliness and simple social curtesy. Next my contractor was told that since he was not a preferred contractor the labor cost would not be covered by Eternal. This is the same contractor that was recommended by them less then a year ago!!! So in summary my eternal water heater failed after less then a year of household use, I have a relatively small household of 2 adults and 1 child so this was not an overuse issue, the part that failed is a common failure according to eternals own support rep. the support line advertised as 24/7 was not, I had to pay extra to get the part in a timely fashion, and I will have to pay for it to be installed by the same contractor they had me use in 2012!!! Seriously!!! When I am in the market for another water heater, which will be soon it will definitely not be made by GRAND HALL.
